Neurosurgery is the surgical treatment of conditions and diseases of the nervous system. The brain, the brainstem, the spinal cord, the peripheral nerves, the spinal column and the skull are the targets of our treatments. Our department of Neurosurgery was founded at St. Jan Hospital in Genk in the early sixties, by Prof. Dr. Emile Beuls.
Thanks to Dr. Jan Monstrey, pioneer in the development of the modern approaches to the spinal column, and Dr. Theo Put, the department gained a lot of approval and was put on the map in Belgium. Dr. Jan Wuyts, the current head of our department, created an association of neurosurgeons. In this association, each neurosurgeon is an expert in their own domain of subspecialties. Our current group of neurosurgeons work together in different cities, provinces and even countries. In close collaboration with the departments of Neurology and Orthopaedic Surgery, we are currently working in Turnhout, Overpelt, Tongeren and Sittard (The Netherlands). Therefore, our service covers a wide geographic territory, which creates the opportunity for the surgeons to subspecialise. Therefore, we can treat a wide and complete variety of neurosurgical conditions. Prof. Dr. Frank Weyns teaches at the University of Hasselt and has an important scientific influence on the association.
Our department also has a close partnership with the University of Leuven, Antwerp, Gent and Liège. We are licensed to train neurosurgical fellows; we have at least three fellowships each year. The purpose of this website is to give patients and medical care workers more insight in the pathology with which we are dealing. Our secretaries are happy to help you with any questions. They are available to your service every working day between 8h30 and 16h30 at 0032(0)89/32 60 40. You can contact us also by email (info@zol.be).
